Bio

Paul Kaye is one of Israel’s earliest defenders, who was clandestinely recruited into the Haganah—a precursor to the IDF—after WWII. He was tasked with relocating 1,500 Holocaust survivors from Cyprus to Palestine, but was captured and detained in a British prison camp. The British eventually transfered the prisoners to the Atlit prison camp in Palestine, and Mr. Kaye escaped to begin working with the elite Haganah fighting force, the Palmach. Once Israel was formally established, he was recruited to join the fledgling navy and became one of the first members of an elite naval unit, where he worked on an underwater demolition team. An enduring pillar of the Jewish community, Mr. Kaye volunteered in the Israeli Consulate in New York City during the Six Day War and later flew to work in Israel’s defense ministry when they were attacked on Yom Kippur in 1973.
